Private Pilot Licence PPL(A)

What is PPL?

PPL stands for ‘Private Pilots Licence’. With PPL you can act as pilot in command (PIC) in non-commercial operations on aeroplanes. Licence is recognised worldwide and can be ‘built on’ with extra ratings and privileges.

The Private Pilots Licence allows to you to pilot an aircraft during daylight hours in reasonably good weather within the limits of Visual Flight Rules (VFR). To allow you to fly in more challenging conditions, the licence can be upgraded to include the ability to fly in Instrument Meteorological Conditions (IMC) and/or at night. Also multi-engine ratings can be added to PPL. Unlike with LAPL, after completion of PPL course and having your licence, you are allowed  to carry passengers.

If you are wondering witch licence you should have, you can make your self a question: What is my goal? If your answetr is tha you are aiming high to become a professional, you´re coise would be PPL.  With so called modular route, the PPL is the first step in the path of a professional aviation career.

Theory course

With our training system you start with professionalism! Up to 90 hours out of 100 h mandatory training can be done via web based training. Your study has never been easier! As minimum you will need Ipad (or similar), internet browser and internet connection and your all set!

There are 9 written examinations (CAA/Traficom) to complete which are all multiple choice and require a 75% pass mark:

  1. Air law
  2. Human Performance
  3. Meteorology
  4. Navigation
  5. Flight Performance and Planning
  6. Aircraft General
  7. Principles of Flight
  8. Communications
  9. Operational Procedures

Flight training

PPL training requires a minimum of 45 hours flying time including ten hours solo, ending with a skills test with an examiner where you will need to prove your general handling and navigation skills.

  • 45 hours is the EASA minimum hour requirement but you should be aware that more training time may be required to achieve test standard. This is determined by your own abilities. Here´s a brake down of the tuition:
  • Minimum 25 hours dual instruction
  • Minimum 10 hours supervised solo, including:
  • Minimum 5 hours solo navigation including a solo qualifying cross-country flight of at least 150 nautical miles, landing at 2 intermediate airfields.

EASA class 2 medical certificate, must be in possession before first solo flight.

Minimum age 16 before first solo

A class 2 medical is required before flying solo which can be obtained from a Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) authorised aero-medical examiner. Most medicals are straightforward and anyone of average health should pass the medical without any difficulties.

Night Rating

Holders of a Pilots Licence can fly a light aeroplane in daylight hours but you should consider upgrading your PPL or LAPL to include a Night Rating allowing you to fly after sunset (quite useful when flying during the winter months). The holder of a night rating is able to fly with passengers during the hours of darkness

Training

Night Rating training is available between August and May, as sunset and weather permits.

The course comprises of:

  • 5 hours flight time in aircraft at night including,
  • 3 hours dual instruction
  • 1 hour of cross-country navigation
  • 5 solo takeoffs and full stop landings
  • There is a small amount of theoretical knowledge training and an exam

Theory part in English is unfortunately available in classroom tuition only.

Light aircraft pilot licence LAPL(A)

The Light Aircraft Pilot Licence (LAPL) is perfect choice for those who like the thrill of flying. Whether you wish to fly your loved ones through the clear blue skies or wish to go fishing with float plane to Lapland the LAPL is your choice.

Once you have your LAPL licence the possibilities are endless!

Training for a LAPL (Light Aircraft Pilot’s Licence) has similar requirements to the EASA PPL. Basically the only the flight training time needed is a minimum of 30 hours with a shorter (80 NM) solo qualifying cross country flight.

LIGHT AIRCRAFT PILOT LICENCE PRIVILEGES AND CONDITIONS

The privileges of the holder of a LAPL for aeroplanes are to act as Pilot in command (PIC) on single engine piston aeroplanes with a maximum certificated take-off mass of 2000 kg or less, carrying a maximum of 3 passengers, such that there are never more than 4 persons on board of the aircraft.

Holders of an LAPL (A) can carry passengers once they have completed 10 hours of flight time as PIC on aeroplanes.

LAPL is definetly your choice if you seek to fly just for fun.

With LAPL you can expand your flying experience with:

  • Night flying,  permitting Night VFR.
  • Aerobatic rating
  • Sailplane (i.e. glider) towing
  • Banner towing
  • Mountain flying
  • Differences training for tailwheel, floats, skis, variable pitch propeller, retractable undercarriage
  • Fly a non-EASA aircraft (e.g. Annex I) . This includes many lower cost and home-built aircrafts.

Crediting

Hours flown with LAPL are fully credited towards PPL and “higher” licences (like CPL)

After completion of LAPL, should you want to upgrade to PPL, your theories are fully credited. In pratice you could have PPL as little as flying 10 hours in ATO or in DTO (+Skill test)

Do you already have LAPL(S), UPL or some other license? You can have crediting! Just contact us and together we will figure out Your needs.

Flight Instructor Training FI(A)

On completion of the Flight Instructor Course a pilot will have the ability to instruct a student to the level required for the issue of PPL(A), including theoretical knowledge instruction. The following are mandatory EASA pre-entry requirements:

  • Hold a valid pilots licence, which includes a valid Single Engine Piston (Land) rating
  • Meet the knowledge requirements for the grant of a EASA CPL (A)
  • Have at least a CPL (A) or have completed at least 200 hours of flight time of which 150 hours as Pilot-in-Command if holding a PPL (A)
  • Have completed at least 30 hours on Single Engine Piston powered aeroplanes of which at least 5 hours shall be in the 6 months preceding the pre-entry flight test)
  • Have completed at least 10 hours instrument flight instruction of which up to 5 may be in a simulator
  • Have completed 20 hours cross-country flight time as PIC of aeroplanes including a cross country flight of 540km (300nm) with full-stop landings at two other aerodromes
  • Passed a specific pre-entry flight test within the 6 months preceding the start of the course

Flight instruction comprises of 30 hours of flight training of which 25 hours will be dual instruction and 5 hours can be mutual flying with another student instructor. During the dual instruction, student instructor will learn how to demonstrate all of the PPL exercises evaluate a student’s performance and correct student errors.

The ground school comprises 125 hours of theoretical knowledge instruction. During this time a student instructor will refresh their theoretical knowledge and learn how to teach, prepare and give technical lectures and conduct pre-flight briefs.

CB-IR Training

The Instrument Rating (IR) allows private pilots to fly in cloud, in any class of airspace. A private flight can take off in any visibility conditions and for you to fly a Class I ILS descent to a decision height of 200ft and RVR of 550m.

No one wants to fly in poor visibility, but the Instrument Rating will navigate you through it.

The aim of the competency based modular EASA “CB-IR” course is for the student pilot to act as PIC in IMC under IFR both within and outside controlled airspace.

The CB-IR training is tailored to your specific needs to get you up to the standard required to pass the initial IR flight test. Part of the (up 30 hours) can be flown outside an ATO with qualified IRI(A)

The CB-IR is available for aeroplanes only. The privileges of the CB-IR do not include flying ‘high-performance aeroplanes’ (HPA) under IFR unless further theoretical knowledge is obtained. Learning objectives for complex and high-performance aircraft have been shifted to a separate, later exam for those progressing beyond light aircraft.

The base requirement is 40 hrs IFR experience (for CB-IR on SEP) prior to being permitted to take the Initial IR Test. Theory requirement is 80 hours of which 72 hours can be done via our web-base distance learning platform. The theory part is available in English only.

The CB IR is a full ICAO IR, and the skills test is same as the full IR skills test. Only the route used to obtain the IR differs. The CB-IR isn’t a rating, but more so a route to the rating.
